MEANING “UPWIND” IN ITALIAN, CONTROVENTO IS A 5 HECTARE VINEYARD IN THE ROCCA SAN GIOVANNI REGION OF ABRUZZO JUST A FEW KILOMETERS OFF THE ADRIATIC SEA. ENZO GROWS SEVEN VARIETALS ON CALCAREOUS SOIL, WHERE THE VINES ARE COOLED BY THE SALTY SEA BREEZE. THE VINES, GROWN ORGANICALLY, ARE ONLY FERTILIZED WITH WINTER GREEN MANURE AND ARE PRIMED ON A WANING MOON. ENZO’S WINEMAKING IS STRICT, ALLOWING GRAPES TO FLOURISH IN EACH AND EVERY BOTTLE. ENZO WANTS TO MAKE WINES LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER DID, IN THE PUREST POSSIBLE FORM, WITH NO FINING, CLARIFYING OR FILTRATION, NO ADDED SULFUR ONLY SPONTANEOUS FERMENTATIONS.
