SERGIO DRAGO, A RISING STAR FROM ALCAMO IN NORTHWEST SICILY, IS GAINING ATTENTION FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE VIOLA BROTHERS (ALDO AND ALESSANDRO). THOUGH HE HAS ONLY BEEN MAKING WINE FOR FIVE YEARS, SERGIO’S WINES HAVE BURST ONTO THE SCENE WITH A FRESHNESS UNLIKE ANYTHING THAT THE REGION HAD EXPRESSED IN THE PAST. AFTER STUDYING AND WORKING AT VARIOUS WINERIES, HE STRUCK OUT ON HIS OWN IN 2017, STARTING WITH TWO HECTARES IN ALCAMO. LOCATED BETWEEN MARSALA AND PALERMO, ALCAMO IS KNOWN FOR ITS DRY, RUGGED HILLS—AN IDEAL GROWING AREA FOR SICILY’S INDIGENOUS CATARRATTO GRAPE. SERGIO IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE FINEST INTERPRETERS OF THIS VARIETAL, SKILLFULLY BALANCING ITS SALINE FRESHNESS WITH COMPLEX, TEXTURAL LAYERS. TODAY, HE WORKS AROUND FIVE HECTARES OF MOSTLY CALCAREOUS SOIL, GROWING NOT ONLY CATARRATTO BUT ALSO NERO D’AVOLA AND SYRAH. ALTHOUGH HE PLANS TO KEEP PRODUCTION LIMITED, SERGIO IS CONTINUALLY EXPLORING NEW SITES IN THE REGION THAT ARE IDEAL FOR CULTIVATING CATARRATTO, FURTHER SOLIDIFYING HIS REPUTATION AS A MASTER OF THIS VARIETY.
